Summary: The Victim Advocate provides sexual violence response services, while overseeing the GVSU Co-Advocates, in a scheduled as well as crisis response role.  This position also directs outreach and prevention efforts in collaboration with other offices on campus while offering training on this topic to diverse campus and community constituents.  

Required Qualifications and Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in social work, counseling or student affairs, and/or related field.
  • Experience in violence prevention/response work, or crisis management.
  • Exceptional communication skills and strong organizational abilities.
  • Demonstrated commitment to issues of diversity and gender equality.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Programming and assessment experience.

Preferred Qualifications and Education:

  • Master’s Degree in social work, counseling or student affairs, and/or related field.
  • Higher education experience in violence prevention/response work.
  • Experience providing violence prevention and outreach programming.
  • Hiring and supervision of graduate students.
  • Grant writing, implementation, and assessment.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide direct response services to victims/survivors of gender-based violence including assisting with immediate needs (housing, academic accommodations, etc.) as well as providing long-term advocacy during criminal and Title IX proceedings if requested.
  • Participate in the design, implementation, and oversight of the campus Co-Advocate program.
  • Participate in the design and implementation of education for students, faculty, and staff in conjunction with diverse campus partners.
  • Assist in coordinating and providing educational curriculum to peer education participants.
  • Participate in the design and implementation of short and long-term strategic planning for violence prevention efforts (for example: public service announcements; magazine, website and brochures).
  • Develop and implement evaluation processes to determine effectiveness of prevention programs.
  • Coordinate and participate in campus training around diverse gender-based violence issues.


  • Draft annual reports for evaluation purposes.
  • Oversee budget expenses.
  • Coordinate and participate in facilitation of Campus Violence Prevention Team meetings with internal and external community partners.
  • Supervise student grad assistant and interns.
  • Apply for, oversee, and assess grant opportunities related to violence prevention and outreach efforts.

Campus and Community Outreach:

  • Participate in campus-wide projects and Inclusion and Equity committees as appropriate.
  • Provide outreach to community partners on GVSU violence prevention and response efforts.
  • Assist in providing information, advocacy, referral, and other direct services to Center for Women and Gender Equity clientele.
