Required Qualifications and Education: Applicants must possess a Ph.D. in communication or a related field. Successful applicants will possess a record of teaching and scholarship that warrants tenure and rank of associate/full professor for this 9-month, full time position. Candidates should also have a record of excellence in leadership of an academic unit. 
 
Preferred Qualifications and Education:  Preference will be given to candidates with a background in one or more of the major programs in the School of Communications: Advertising/Public Relations, Communication Studies, Health Communication, Multimedia Journalism. A demonstrated record of experience with fundraising and building off-campus partnerships for faculty and students is preferred. 
 
Responsibilities – Essential Functions:  The successful candidate will be responsible for the operation, management, and leadership of the School of Communications. This includes the following specific responsibilities: 
1. Recruitment of faculty and staff (including part-time and visiting faculty), execution of curriculum, supporting faculty teaching and scholarship.
2. Managing the resources and infrastructure of the School, including supervision of clerical and technical support personnel, allocation of equipment and office spaces, technology upgrades, and management of budget.
3. Overseeing personnel matters in the School, including supervision and coordination of annual performance reviews of faculty and staff and chairing faculty tenure and promotion actions.
4. Direction of planning and assessment activities of the School and its major programs.
5. Overseeing operations of the School, including conducting faculty meetings, overseeing media presence, and maintaining the School’s records. 
6. Oversight and coordination of curricular and instructional matters of the School in collaboration with five program coordinators and an associate director. 
7. Representing the School at all College of Liberal Arts and Sciences unit head meetings.
8. Advocating for the needs of the School at both the college and university levels, and promoting excellence in teaching and scholarly/creative activity.
 
Salary:  Salary is commensurate with skills and experience.  
 
Department/Division:  The GVSU School of Communications (www.gvsu.edu/soc) places a premium on commitment to the integration of liberal and professional education. The School, located in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, offers a core of courses in communications, after which students select a major in Advertising/Public Relations, Communication Studies, Health Communication, or Multimedia Journalism. The School also offers a Masters in Communication. The School of Communications has more than 1,000 students.
