The Environmental and Sustainability Studies (ENS) program at Grand Valley State University invites applications for an affiliate faculty member with expertise in interdisciplinary environmental and sustainability studies. The program is particularly interested in hiring an instructor with competency in one or more of the following areas: energy and climate change, environmental history, urban studies.

The Affiliate Faculty of Instruction position is a full-time, non-tenurable appointment that is indefinitely renewable. The expected start date is August 2020. The faculty member will teach four courses per semester in ENS, and as needed, in other programs within the Brooks College of Interdisciplinary Studies. This is a teaching appointment with limited service and research expectations. This position is intended to complement existing strengths in a small but rapidly growing program that practices interdisciplinary studies as drawing from multiple disciplinary locations, works across and for cultural communities, and engages with varied methodological and theoretical frameworks.

The program offers a BA, BS, and a minor in environmental and sustainability studies, as well as an undergraduate certificate in sustainable food systems. We are particularly interested in applicants who have experience with place-based and community-based learning, and with the use of practical collaborative projects in classes. We seek applicants who effectively address diversity – cultural and intellectual, social, and ecological – in their teaching. Please see for more information about the ENS program.

Required Qualifications and Education:

  • Masters degree or the equivalent in a field relevant to interdisciplinary environmental and sustainability studies, completed by the time of appointment (August 2020)
  • Experience in interdisciplinary teaching that incorporates knowledge from the physical and life sciences, social sciences, and humanities
  • Experience working with underrepresented and diverse populations, as well as a commitment to environmental justice work within these populations
  • Commitment to cultivating and serving diverse communities of learners

Preferred Qualifications and Education:

  • PhD or the equivalent in a field relevant to interdisciplinary environmental and sustainability studies, completed by the time of appointment (August 2020)
  • Expertise in one or more of the following areas: energy and climate change, environmental history, urban studies
  • Demonstrated record of teaching excellence
  • Professional experience in the environmental and sustainability sector
  • Pedagogical experience with community-based learning and/or place-based learning
  • Pedagogical experience with practical collaborative projects
  • Pedagogical experience teaching writing and professional communications skills
  • Record of successful ongoing collaboration with non-academic community partners
  • Competence to teach courses in interdisciplinary research methods and/or sustainability assessment and reporting
  • Interest and ability to assist in developing new courses for the ENS program

Responsibilities – Essential Functions:

  • Teaching core courses for the program, including ENS 201 - Introduction to Environmental and Sustainability Studies, ENS 300 – Principles of Sustainability, and ENS 401 – Environmental Problem Solving (Capstone)
  • Teaching at the Allendale and downtown Grand Rapids campuses
  • Student advising
  • Basic service to the ENS program
  • Staying current on scholarship relevant to teaching responsibilities

Responsibilities – Non-Essential Functions:

  • Teach other courses in ENS or in other Brooks College programs
  • Teaching at other GVSU locations (Holland, Muskegon, Traverse City, field school sites)
  • Additional service to the ENS program and Brooks College of Interdisciplinary Studies
  • Assisting to develop and teach new courses for the ENS program
