Summary: The Department of English seeks an assistant professor, full-time, 9-month, tenure-track, specializing in PK-6 Literacy Education. The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences is hiring three assistant professors (English, Math, Social Studies) for its new elementary education program in Pedagogical Content Knowledge for Elementary Teaching (PCKET). We are seeking innovative educators who are excited about the opportunity to collaborate with colleagues who teach in this program.
Required Qualifications and Education:
- Doctorate in Reading/Literacy, English Education, Curriculum and Instruction, Urban Education, or other related fields (ABD candidate will be considered for a two-year contract with provision that the Ph.D. must be completed by December 2023);
- Evidence of critical, reflective thinking about the teaching and learning of literacy;\
- Demonstrated potential for successful college-level teaching and research;
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, such as the ability to interact with others with respect, empathy, and cultural humility;
- Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and access. This could include experience with inclusive pedagogies; research relating to marginalized populations or social inequality; engagement with community-based social justice work; and other forms of culturally sustaining teaching, scholarship, and service.
Preferred Qualifications and Education:
- K-6 teaching experience
- Expertise in literacy instruction in multicultural, multilingual, multidialectal contexts and/or with English language learners;
- Expertise in early childhood literacy education;
- Expertise in critical literacy;
- Ability to work productively with colleagues with flexibility and creativity.
Responsibilities - Essential Functions:
- Duties each semester include a 9-credit hour teaching load, baseline scholarship and service, and a significant focus (equivalent to 3 credit hours) of additional responsibilities in teaching, scholarship, and/or service depending on the candidate's interests and the English department’s and PCKET program needs.
- Department faculty are expected to maintain a productive program of scholarship and to participate actively in the life of the department. Employment begins August 6, 2022.

Department/College: The English Department strengthens the liberal education of students by developing a deepened understanding of language and literacy, the value of critical reading and effective writing, and the richness of literature, past and present.
