SUMMARY: This position is responsible for all aspects of the McNair Scholars Program, including program design and implementation, strategic planning and assessment, McNair Scholar recruitment and support, staff supervision and development, budget management, grant preparation, and federal reporting requirements. This role will design, implement, supervise, and monitor program activities and outcomes in accordance with federal regulations and program objectives. Additionally, it will collaborate with GVSU TRIO program staff, the GVSU Office of Undergraduate Research, and University faculty partners. It will serve as the lead student advisor and has a strong interest in research and scholarship. Candidates with a demonstrated awareness of and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion is highly valued. This is a grant-funded position.
Responsibilities - Essential Functions:
- Design, implement, supervise, and monitor program activities and outcomes in accordance with federal regulations and program objectives.
- Oversee the McNair Scholar recruitment and selection process.
- Provide supervision of professional, graduate and undergraduate staff.
- Provide budget management for the program, including monitoring program budgets, budget planning, and expenditures.
- Execute the plan of operations per the grant’s guidelines. Lead and consult in the application and writing process of future GVSU McNair Scholars Program grants.
- Maintain accurate data and documentation of all program participants and complete the Annual Performance Report (APR) to the U.S. Department of Education.
- Advise prospective McNair Scholars and current McNair Scholars on research and scholarly opportunities.
- Some travel, nights, and weekends are required.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications and Education:
- Master’s Degree in student affairs, social work, counseling, higher education, or a similar field;
- Minimum five years’ experience in higher education administration, academic and/or counseling capacity, program design, project management, strategic planning, and evaluation at the college level;
- Demonstrated understanding and commitment to first-generation students, and/or students from historically underrepresented groups in higher education and a demonstrated ability to effectively advise and advocate for those students from the target population in a college setting;
- Knowledge of TRIO or other higher education academic programs and support services and effective practices supporting student recruitment, retention, and development;
- Experience in reporting and budget management;
- Demonstrated ability to work with faculty from various disciplines;
- Demonstrated strong oral and written communication skills;
- Commitment to diversity, inclusion, and social justice in higher education.
- Experience in financial aid counseling and academic advising;
- Some understanding of the graduate admissions process;
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and others.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated experience working with culturally diverse college student populations.
