We are seeking applications for a 9-month, full-time, one-year, visiting assistant professor position, in the Integrative, Religious, and Intercultural Studies Department, in the Brooks College of Interdisciplinary Studies, Grand Valley State University. This position is potentially renewable, depending on need and available funding, for up to three years. The teaching assignment for the 2023-24 academic year will be four courses per semester, teaching courses primarily within the IRIS department.
The successful candidate should have a demonstrated record of teaching interdisciplinary courses. Applicants with expertise in U.S. diversity, diasporic communities, human rights, citizenship, globalization, and/or labor are particularly encouraged to apply. In an effort to address areas of need within the Brooks College of Interdisciplinary Studies, we are especially interested in hiring someone who will fill areas of need not only in 2023-24, but ideally beyond the year. Our additional areas of need within the Brooks College include: Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies; Religious Studies; Human Rights; Environmental and Sustainability Studies; Digital Studies; Area and Global Studies. Expertise and experience in one or more of these areas is highly desired, specifically an ability to teach in one or more of the programs listed above.
Required Qualifications:
- Demonstrated teaching and/or scholarly expertise in in U.S. diversity, diasporic communities, human rights, citizenship, globalization, and/or labor
- Demonstrated experience in and/or commitment to teaching and working effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds (e.g. adult learners, first generation students) and members of underrepresented groups
- Demonstrated teaching and/or scholarly expertise in Latinx Studies, Asian/Asian American Studies, LGBTQ+ Studies, Middle Eastern/Arab American Studies, African/African American Studies, and/or Indigenous Studies
- Advanced degree (including ABD) in related field (e.g., American Studies; Ethnic Studies; Women’s, Gender, or Sexuality Studies; Media/Communication Studies; Cultural Studies; History; English; Geography)
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with and evidence of interdisciplinary teaching and/or scholarship in anti-Blackness, Islamophobia, xenophobia, and/or anti-Asian racism
- Demonstrated expertise in face-to-face, hybrid, and online teaching
- Completed PhD or terminal degree in related field (e.g., American Studies; Ethnic Studies; Women’s, Gender, or Sexuality Studies; Media/Communication Studies; Cultural Studies; History; English; Geography)
- Demonstrated commitment to high impact teaching practices
- Demonstrated ability to teach some of the following courses across the program: INT 201: Diversity in the United States; INT 312: Collaborative Communication; INT 314: Life Journeys; INT 319: Human Traffic and Trafficking; INT 325: LGBTQ Identities; INT 326: Sexuality, Justice, and Advocacy; INT 331: Person and Profession in a Global Environment; ITC 100: Introduction to Intercultural Competence
- Demonstrated ability to teach in additional areas of need within Brooks College—Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies; Religious Studies; Human Rights; Environmental and Sustainability Studies; Digital Studies; and Area and Global Studies
