The Student Health Promotions Coordinator will build, develop, coordinate, and administer university-wide educational programs, initiatives, and collaborations that reduce personal, institutional, and community health risks for GVSU students. Under the Division of Student Affairs and the department of Campus Recreation, this position will develop and deliver evidence-informed prevention, health promotion, wellness education, and training using a holistic prevention and wellness model to create a culture that supports student development and success. 

The ideal candidate for this position will have a campus-based prevention, outreach, and training background, and will hold a degree in public health or the equivalent credential. Specifically, this person will be able to conceptualize health promotion in the context of higher education and student life, possess knowledge of health promotion, behavior change, population-based theories and models, and evidence-informed health promotion programs/initiatives.  They should understand the intersections among learning, social justice, health equity, and health as well as demonstrate a commitment to diversity, social justice, cultural competence, and the ability to work in a multicultural environment.  Because this is a new position, this person must also have skills in developing and launching new initiatives. These include, but are not limited to, possessing outstanding organizational skills, building organizational capacities in others, and establishing solid collaborative relationships with students, faculty, staff, and other university colleagues.

Required Qualifications and Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Health Education, Public Health, or other health-related discipline.
  • Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES), Certified in Public Health (CPH), or eligible.
  • Knowledge of current evidence-based prevention and health promotion practices and theories for college students.
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills, including the capability to facilitate presentations to large and small groups of students, staff, and faculty.
  • A commitment and ability to engage students in the learning process through intentional planning and outreach.
  • Ability to deal sensitively with confidential information and maintain a high degree of professionalism and discretion.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse populations and a commitment to inclusion and equity.

Preferred Qualifications and Education:

  • Master's Degree in Health Education, Public Health, or other health-related discipline.
  • Previous work experience in health promotion and/or health education, preferably in higher education and student affairs.
  • Demonstrated experience in prevention efforts in health and wellness issues relevant to a college population (general health, sexual health, nutrition, sleep, alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs, etc.)
  • Energetic and dynamic public speaker and educator.
  • Working knowledge of assessment.
  • Strong organizational, administrative, collaborative, supervisory, and communication skills.
  • Experience in grant writing.
  • Creative and capable of managing multiple roles and responsibilities.

Responsibilities – Essential Functions:

  • Lead health education initiatives on campus to improve the wellbeing of GVSU students.
  • Incorporate diversity and social justice concepts and principles into health promotion services.
  • Supervise student graduate and undergraduate peer educators (students from GVSU's health programs such as Public Health, Health Communications, etc.)
  • Supervise part-time staff including students, massage therapists, and dietician.
  • Effectively develop and implement wellness related services and programs including assessing needs of GVSU students regarding health, planning health education/promotion, implementing programs, conducting evaluations and research related to health education/prevention work.
  • Schedule, develop, implement, deliver and assess health and wellness outreach and prevention programs to the GVSU student body in target areas to include, but not limited to: health screening, smoking cessation, sexual health, communicable diseases, alcohol and drug abuse awareness, sleep deprivation, stress management, healthy relationships, anxiety, nutrition, etc.
  • Develop and implement evaluation tools to assess programs including program reports, participant evaluations, statistical data, and other relevant information to make recommendations on scope, size, and nature of future programs; ability to generate reports and outcome information to communicate benefits of student health promotion efforts and continually garner support.
  • Conduct educational programs on health and wellness issues for student groups such as residence hall students, commuters, athletic teams, fraternities and sororities, and student clubs and organizations.
  • Collaborate with students, various campus departments, and community partners to develop a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to health for students.
  • Collaborate with the Marketing Team to utilize a wide range of accessible media including educational technologies, electronic and web-based programs, and social media to encourage student participation in health education and promotion programs.
  • Create positive individual and environmental outcomes through research and evidence-based practices with a focus on student development.
  • Be innovative while staying current with practices and trends in health promotion.
  • Manage budget including pursuing wellness-related grants and outside funding sources.
  • Other duties as assigned.
