The School of Engineering within Grand Valley State University’s Seymour and Esther Padnos College of Engineering and Computing invites candidates for an Affiliate Faculty position. The Affiliate Faculty member will be appointed for one academic year, or fiscal year if appropriate, on a full-time or part-time basis.  This may be renewed once for an additional academic or fiscal year. Thereafter, the individual may be appointed for three (3) consecutive academic or fiscal years.

This position has been established to support our Engineering programs, particularly, but not limited to, our foundational first-year engineering courses and interdisciplinary engineering courses. The start date for these positions is August 2021.

This position is housed within the interdisciplinary engineering program with a focus on the first-year course sequence.  Experience and interest in first-year engineering education and cornerstone design are highly valued, and experience in drafting, CAD, and robotics/Arduino projects. All individuals applying must be able to teach and/or be willing to learn to teach engineering design, introductory-level C programming, CAD/CAM, and Arduino microcontroller programming and have additional expertise in either Product Design and Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Electrical/Computer Engineering as described below.

Areas of expertise or interest:

Product Design and Manufacturing Engineering Emphases include engineering design, CAD/CAM, manufacturing and automation, and technical communications. 

Mechanical Engineering Emphases include mechanical design, solid mechanics, CAD, manufacturing, instrumentation, and technical communications. 

Electrical/Computer Engineering Emphases include circuits, digital logic, programming, microcontrollers, and technical communications.

GVSU's engineering programs lead to the Bachelor of Science in Engineering (BSE) degree. The BSE program consists of project-intensive ABET accredited majors in Computer, Electrical, Interdisciplinary, Mechanical, and Product Design and Manufacturing Engineering with mandatory co-op education experiences. Sponsored by local industry, these programs yield job-ready, as well as graduate-school-ready, engineering graduates.

Candidates must be committed to GVSU’s vision of inclusion and equity. Candidates with a bachelor’s degree and extensive industry experience will be considered.  All candidates must be committed to the highest quality of laboratory and project-based teaching with excellent verbal and written communication skills. 

This position involves teaching in our undergraduate engineering programs, primarily in the first and second years of the engineering program. The successful applicant will support our BSE programs primarily through teaching and curriculum development as well as accreditation. The selected applicant will support our co-op education and project-based teaching process as well as industrial collaborations. A Master’s degree is preferred. Preference will be given to candidates who also possess industrial and/or project-based experience. The ability to teach broadly in one’s field and an interest in general curriculum development are desired. An ability to participate in and capitalize upon existing collaborations with our West Michigan industrial partners is highly valued.

Required qualification and education: A bachelor's degree in engineering is required, and expertise in one of the engineering areas mentioned above.

Preferred Qualifications and Education: A Master’s degree in engineering is preferred. Preference will be given to candidates who also possess industrial and/or project-based experience.  Industrial experience related to design projects would be highly beneficial.  The ability to teach broadly in one’s field and an interest in general curriculum development are desired.

Responsibilities – Essential Functions: The candidate must be able to teach effectively to students who are in their first year of our engineering program.

Responsibilities – Non-Essential Functions: It would be beneficial if the candidate could contribute to the continuous improvement of the curriculum.
