Position Title: Data Architect

Division/Department: Information Technology/Data & Analytics

Summary

This position provides leadership in data management, data warehousing, and analytics technologies across the organization, from strategic decision-making to project planning. The person in this position is a fast learner and technically curious.

 

PRIMARY DUTIES

  1. Design and create a data architecture to dynamically address data ingestion from different data sources and data types, data integrity across all platforms, integration, data lakes, data warehousing and analytical processes.
  2. Develop requirements and specification documentation for data mapping and data transformation processes. It will include data modeling, conversion, validation, overseeing and performing ETL, ELT functions, integration solutions, and data extract tasks.
  3. Define and document input data formats and layouts. Provide input and guidance on schema database design. Plan for appropriate data updates, archival and backup procedures, and extractions. Define and execute workflow of moving data from the database into business intelligence solutions.
  4. Ensure that proposed data management aligns with the university's strategic goals and objectives.
  5. Requirements gathering. Work closely with the Enterprise Applications and Architecture teams, and functional stakeholders to define and understand business needs. Translate the requirements into data specifications and design data structures that will meet those needs
  6. Research emerging technologies supporting enterprise data and architecture development efforts and recommend technologies that increase cost-effectiveness and systems scalability.
  7. Communicate work status to leadership and team members. Participate in strategic planning for approved projects and research and evaluate technical solutions for new development and ongoing issues.
  8. Performs other duties as required/assigned by manager.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

  1. Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or Information Systems.
  2. Three to five years of work experience in Information Systems specifically in database management or data architecture.
  3. Experience with relational and non-relational data platforms, data lake concepts, modern ETL/ELT automation techniques, data warehouse using cloud technologies, etc.
  4. Advanced knowledge and experience using SQL and scripting languages.
  5. Experience with data visualization and self-service BI/data warehousing/ advanced analytics tools methodologies for integration, data security, data governance, and data science.
  6. Strong knowledge of software evaluation principles and practices.
  7. Good knowledge of applicable data privacy practices and laws.
  8. Strong interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills. Ability to present complex concepts in user-friendly language
  9. Able to prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment.
  10. Experience working in a team-oriented environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Experience with machine learning, artificial intelligence applications and Data Science development languages (R, Python, etc.).
  2. Experience using ERPs in a higher-ed setting.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

Normal office environment. Some travel may be required.
