This position is the HR liaison for all assigned GVSU employees. This role is the driver for the implementation and compliance of Human Resource programs and processes. This position is responsible for communication and implementation of HR initiatives and should have considerable knowledge of principles and practices of human resources. We have two positions open.
- Central contact for employees and University leadership for all HR matters.
- Gain knowledge in HR areas including but not limited to benefits, employment and compensation, to assist with all incoming requests. Engage area of expertise when needed.
- Counsel leaders regarding employee performance and misconduct concerns including appropriate disciplinary matters.
- Ensure a proactive employee relations environment including employee advocacy, effective communication and compliance with policies and laws that ensure fair treatment.
- Consult on employee relations issues maintaining an appropriate balance between employee and leadership advocacy.
- Keep leaders advised of potential problem areas and recommend and/or implement solutions as appropriate.
- Ensure that all federal, state, and local laws affecting HR-related functions and compliance and leadership matters are proactively managed, including but not limited to EEO.
- Research and analyze detailed information to support employment decisions.
- Coach, counsel, and guide managers through the execution of employee disciplinary action process including separation.
- Participate in contract negotiations during collective bargaining agreement negotiations and/or handbook updates and modifications for assigned employee groups.
- Interpret and administer unionized employee contracts for leadership and staff, resolve disputes.
- Advise leadership on a variety of union- leadership relations and/or issues.
- Participate in regular meetings with union leadership to discuss contract and language updates.
- Maintain data regarding employee disciplinary actions and investigations.
- Participate on screening committees in the selection of employees to fill vacant positions
- Work collaboratively with leadership to design job descriptions for assigned union and non-union employee groups.
- Coordinate recruitment activities with Hiring Managers and/or other appropriate personnel when position(s) become vacant.
- Conduct exit interviews, assess employee feedback, and evaluate the data and make recommendations for improvements to leadership.
- Perform other duties as required/assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Bachelor’s degree required in business, human resources, public administration or related field preferred. Master’s degree preferred.
- One to three years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Prefer candidates that are bilingual in Spanish.
- Knowledge of human resources policies, procedures and leadership practices, involving recruitment, employment, terminations and contract administration.
- Understanding of local, state and federal laws, regulations and standards pertaining to public sector labor relations.
- Ability to use generalized software systems (i.e., Banner, OnBase, Microsoft Office, etc.).
- Attention to detail and organization.
- Able to prioritize and manage a wide variety and high quantity of tasks at any given time.
- Both verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to build relationships with leaders in order to attain “trusted advisor” status.
- Calm demeanor and approach in difficult and trying situations.
- Ability to problem solve.
- Ability to lead project teams and keep projects on track.
- Basic presentation skills.
- Ability to stay on task and meet deadlines.
Working Conditions: Normal office environment. Minimal travel between buildings, campuses and for attendance at career fairs as needed.
