Summary:

The Director of Academic and Research Computing provides strategic direction and support for advanced academic technologies and high-performance research computing at Grand Valley State University. This is a leadership role in Information Technology, reporting to the Chief Technology Officer. The successful candidate will collaborate on cutting-edge technologies, architecture design, procurement, grant-funding, security, and maintenance; this position is responsible for understanding and supporting research needs across campus through consultation with faculty, staff, and students. They will both oversee existing environments and help architect an environment for future growth, optimized for speed-to-deployment, security, performance, and uptime.

Required Qualifications and Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience, including supervisory experience.
  • Demonstrated expertise in high performance computing systems, modern IT infrastructure, virtualized desktops, emerging research technologies and related technologies deployed in enterprise research computing environments.
  • Experience working in a multi-disciplinary team, communicating effectively with colleagues and end-users possessing varying technical skillsets.
  • Experience with scientific data management, organization, storage, and security.
  • Experience facilitating communication and supportive relationships with vendors.
  • Ability to take initiative, add value, remove barriers, solve problems, and move multiple projects forward to successful completion using effective project management skills.
  • Exceptional communication, writing, and teamwork skills and abilities.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace.

Preferred Qualifications and Education:

  • Advanced degree in a technical field.
  • Demonstrated experience strategically planning and building team and infrastructure to support research and academic technology.
  • Experience working in higher ed, providing direct support to faculty and students.

Responsibilities – Essential Functions:

  • Lead research and high-performance computing initiatives in collaboration with faculty, students, and other campus partners. Serve as subject matter expert in multiple technologies, maintaining in-depth technical and functional awareness and competency.
  • Build and manage a team to support research initiatives and advanced academic technologies at the university. Team will include directly assigned team members, functional team members from other teams, and student workers.
  • Gather and refine requirements to thoroughly understand requests, then document scope of work to implement solutions meeting research and curriculum-related need. 
  • Aid in the design, deployment, and operation of high-performance computing and storage systems, both on-prem and cloud-hosted.
  • Regularly collaborate with team members, vendors and suppliers in support of enterprise-class infrastructure, applications, and platforms from various product portfolios. 
  • Provide high quality customer-centric service, end user support, documentation, training, and professional development.
  • Identify, analyze, diagnose, research, resolve and log in a ticketing system all technical issues and requests. Develop and maintain service level agreements and supporting system for monitoring and tracking metrics.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor.
