Summary:

GVSU Libraries are seeking a Temporary Library Support Staff. This individual will work collaboratively to support library operations and customer service.

In addition to regularly scheduled shifts (approx. 15 hours/week), this position is also on call for all hours of operation and library locations in Allendale and downtown Grand Rapids.

This is a temporary part-time position that is not eligible for benefits.

NOTE: GVSU students who are enrolled in 6+ credits are not eligible for this position. That classifies them as a student employee, and they must be hired through Student Employment.

Required Qualifications:

  • Availability to work nights and weekends
  • High school graduate or equivalent
  • Experience with computer software such as Microsoft Office or equivalent
  • Typing and spelling competency
  • Possess strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to provide quality customer service
  • Ability to work in a team environment and independently
  • Ability to maintain satisfactory work performance and attendance records
  • Awareness of inclusion, equity, and accessibility needs to provide customer service that is equitable and welcoming to all

Essential Functions:

  • Overseeing service desk activity, including the frontline and behind-the-scenes services provided by student employees
  • Supporting student employees by sharing relevant information, assisting with training initiatives, and ensuring they have a positive employment experience
  • Delivering exemplary customer service, in person and virtually
  • Providing reference assistance requiring significant knowledge of the library’s services, holdings, website, and online databases
  • Identifying and responding to security and safety issues that arise to ensure that the library environment is safe and conducive to learning
  • Assisting with the timely opening and secure closure of the library

Salary: $17/hour, 29 hours per week maximum, not benefit eligible

Department/Division: University Libraries

Physical Demands: Prolonged periods of sitting while using a computer and telephone. Regular need to navigate to other areas of the building. Use of keys to lock/unlock doors.
