Summary: The Department of English invites applications for the position of Visiting Assistant Professor specializing in applied linguistics and ESL teacher education for public K-12 systems. The position is for one year beginning in August 2023 with the potential for renewal for up to three years.

We seek a candidate with broad expertise in linguistics and applied linguistics/TESOL to teach courses in the English Department designated as linguistics-focused, such as language and power, language and gender, the history of English, teaching ELs in elementary and secondary contexts, sociolinguistics, and English grammar. The ideal candidate should be prepared to deliver classes online if it is necessary for the university to transition to remote learning under special circumstances. We are particularly interested in receiving applications from candidates from underrepresented groups, and from candidates who have interest and/or experience in working with diverse student and community populations. There are no service or research requirements for this position.

Required Qualifications and Education:

  • PhD in Applied Linguistics/TESOL or a related field; ABD considered (Please note that due to HLC requirements, candidates from a non-applied linguistics/TESOL field must show relevant MA-level coursework in one or more of the listed subareas of applied linguistics).
  • Experience in, demonstrated understanding of, or interest in social justice education and/or initiatives, and/or inclusion, diversity, and/or intercultural training. 
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, such as the ability to interact with others with respect and empathy. 

Preferred Qualifications and Education:

  • Experience teaching university-level students
  • Familiarity with elementary and secondary educational systems

Responsibilities:  

  • Teach a 4/4 teaching load during the academic year with no service or research requirements.
  • Hold regular office hours for students.
  • Conduct course assessments as needed for accreditation and other reporting purposes.
