Summary: The Department of Recreation & Wellness is looking for a highly motivated individual to oversee our Club Sports program and Business Operations.

Recreation & Wellness offers multi-faceted programs that are designed to enhance and engage the GVSU community through providing inclusive and diverse recreational opportunities that inspire participation, promote health and wellbeing, and encourage student development and success. The department operates six core program areas: Club Sports, Fitness Services, Student Wellness, Intramural Sports, Outdoor Adventures and the Injury Care Clinic. Through these programs, the department serves approximately 60% of all GVSU students including 75% of first year undergraduates.

The Assistant Director will report to the Associate Director of Recreation & Wellness.

Required Qualifications and Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Two years of related experience in sports or recreation.
  • Ability to work routine nights and weekends as staff trainings or events require.
  • Must have strong verbal and written communication skills, organizational skills, and the ability to work independently and as a member of a cohesive energetic team.

Preferred Qualifications and Education:

  • Master’s degree in Business, Sports/Recreation Administration, Education, or related field.
  • Experience as a Coach or supervising Coaches.
  • Experience with budgeting and financial oversight.

Responsibilities – Essential Functions:

Club Sports

  • Provide direct and innovative leadership to a Club Sports program consisting of over 1,300 students and 50+ teams, cultivating a quality, inclusive, safe, and diverse environment for all involved, while maximizing competitive opportunities.
  • Provide leadership, supervision, and development of a full-time Sports Programs Coordinator, multiple part-time Club Sport coaches, student-employees, and other part-time staff.
  • Establish and coordinate a comprehensive coach’s evaluation and development program.
  • Assist with managing the Club Sports web page and social media accounts, keeping information up to date and relevant to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Assist with coordinating assessment efforts, helping to benchmark with other club sport programs and evaluating current and future needs.
  • In collaboration with the Assistant Director of Intramural Sports, schedule facilities of club sport activities and events, ensuring adequate and appropriate use.
  • Actively participate in NIRSA and engage in other educational opportunities to align with emerging issues relevant to Club Sports, Recreation & Wellness, and mitigating risk.
  • Reduce liability and mitigate risk through various Risk Management efforts, including updating Emergency Action Plans regularly and developing protocols and processes, while ensuring understanding for staff and club sport participants.
  • Serve on various university committees, including the Recreation Risk Management Committee and Student Life Risk Committee.
  • Maintain relationships across campus, specifically with the Office of Student Life, Office of Student Conduct and Conflict Resolution, Alcohol & Other Drugs, Title IX, Procurement, Human Resources, University Budget, Controller's Office, and Risk Management, and other partner departments and student groups
  • Perform other duties as assigned within the scope and responsibility and requirements of the job.

Business Operations

  • Oversee business operations and financial practices, including the development, implementation, and enforcement of policies and procedures as it relates to Club Sports and the department of Recreation & Wellness.
  • Manage revenue and expense processes for 50+ Club Sport teams, including purchasing, travel coordination, and funding allocations, ensuring compliance with GVSU policies and procedures.
  • Responsible for creating, forecasting, and monitoring the Club Sports program budget, as well as collaborating with student-leaders and coaches to ensure fiscal responsibility of individual club accounts.
  • Serve as primary liaison for recruiting and maintaining relationships for Club Sport sponsors and external program partners.
  • Oversee program-wide development and fundraising efforts, working with Club Sport leaders to strengthen their Alumni Relations efforts and University Development connections.
  • Serve as department liaison for off-campus facility lease agreements and long-term rentals, in collaboration with Facilities Planning.
  • Provide primary oversight of Club Sports and department equipment inventory and storage, coordinating the tracking, maintenance, and replacement of items.
  • Establish and maintain relationships across campus as it relates to business operations and financial oversight, specifically with Procurement, Alumni Relations, University Development, Accounts Payable, University Budget, Controller's Office, and other partner departments.
