Summary: The College of Liberal Arts & Sciences (CLAS) Academic Advising Center seeks a full-time undergraduate academic advisor to collaborate with our current Advising Center Director, staff, and faculty to provide inclusive and intentional advising and support and foster a diverse, inclusive, and welcoming space for all students served by our center. The Academic Advisor will share responsibility with other CLAS Academic Advisors and faculty advisors for providing timely and accurate academic advising to students in all majors and minors housed in the college as well as providing support for additional majors, programs, and initiatives supported by the CLAS Academic Advising Center. The Academic Advisor will assist with Transfer Student Advising & Registration, First Year Advising & Registration, International Student Advising & Registration, and participate in other student support and advising events, programs, and initiatives as needed throughout the year. This position is located on the Allendale campus, and the advisor will utilize both in-person and virtual appointments.

Responsibilities and Essential Functions:

  • Serve as one of the first points of contact for College of Liberal Arts & Sciences (CLAS) students.
  • Provide accessible, accurate, timely, and consistent academic advising to students pursuing majors and/or minors offered by the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
  • Provide proactive, developmental, and appreciative advising and support to students, including those experiencing academic difficulty and those seeking acceptance into competitive secondary admission undergraduate and graduate programs.
  • Advise students in choosing an appropriate major and/or minor, and assist them with the appropriate course selection including a blend of general education and program-specific requirements.
  • Assist students with building educational plans that are consistent with their goals, abilities, and interests.
  • Provide appropriate referrals to academic departments, student support programs and other university resources as necessary to help students achieve their academic goals.
  • Provide academic advising at the freshman, transfer, and international student advising and registrations sessions.
  • Maintain a systematic process for monitoring academic progress and providing individual feedback to students.
  • Provide students with clear and accurate information on GVSU policies and procedures as it pertains to degree completion.
  • Provide academic information to prospective students through participation in Admissions recruiting events, individualized appointments, and electronic means.
  • Serve as a liaison to specific academic departments within and outside of CLAS to ensure consistent and accurate student advising.
  • Collaborate with faculty advisors and liaisons in the academic units to provide comprehensive academic advising to students.
  • Maintain accurate and appropriate advising materials for the area(s) of specialty.
  • Collaborate with various campus partners, faculty, and staff to provide programming.
  • Other responsibilities as defined by the Director of the CLAS Academic Advising Center.
  • This position works closely with their team leader but reports directly to the Director of the CLAS Academic Advising Center.

Required Qualifications and Education:

  • Earned Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four-year university
  • Minimum of 1 year of academic advising experience in higher education
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to access, inclusion, equity, and anti-racism, including experience working with students from diverse backgrounds and identities
  • Strong understanding of and demonstrated desire for collaborative approaches to problem-solving
  • Demonstrated ability and willingness to work both autonomously as well as part of a collaborative team

Preferred Qualifications and Education:

  • Earned Master’s degree in an advising-related field such as College Student Development, Adult and Higher Education, or Educational Leadership
  • Possession of the NACADA Academic Advising Certificate or Master’s Degree in Academic Advising
  • At least two years of full-time advising or mentoring experience for undergraduate students
  • Demonstrated experience working with and advising students interested in pursuing majors and minors in the liberal arts and sciences
  • Familiarity with current trends and best practices in advising.
  • Familiarity with computer information systems and web-based records and registration systems, especially Banner, Degree Works, and/or EAB Navigate

Salary:  $45,000 - 46,200, dependent on skills and experience of the selected candidate
